These 1st year art students learned about basic color theory and did some painting exercises experimenting with value through mixing primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. They had to implement these practices into a landscape painting. The criteria for the painting included use of value through color theory, collage with magazines or other materials, and the use of texture. Some students used paper mâché to make the foregrounds of the landscape appear 3-dimensional and other used torn paper collage as their texture. Students learned about color theory, value, and texture in this project through the act of art making and had fun experimenting at the same time. Much of this procedure was experimenting, trial and error. I encouraged students that the process was more important than the outcome.
For many of these students, it's was their first time working in a paint medium. It's natural for them to try to make perfect paintings and struggle doing so. That's why I encourage experimentation with the medium. Being so flexible, there are so many directions to go with the paint medium and students must have time to find what they are comfortable doing through extensive exploration. I always tell them, "No painter has a style until they have created at least 100 paintings. This is your first painting. Decide what you're comfortable with after 99 more."

I like the style comment. Probably the same can be said of student writers. The style will emerge over time and practice.
